SAP’s announcement to discontinue support for SAP ECC 6 (along with SAP Customer Relationship Management 7.0, SAP Supply Chain Management 7.0, and SAP Supplier Relationship Management 7.0 applications and SAP Business Suite) by end of 2027 (or 2030, with extended maintenance) provides customers a limited window to plan the new road map for their organisations. The customers will have to use the available time to plan their move to SAP S/4HANA, with greater certainty.
However, organisations will also need to go beyond Costs and Change Management as the prime reasons to move to S/4 by 2027, meaning they must have a clear business case. The higher maintenance costs beyond 2027 should definitely be taken into account for all business case considerations and future plans to move to SAP S/4HANA. The journey beyond 2027 will continue to overwhelm the CIOs with the questions demanding timely answers – – SAP ECC or SAP S/4HANA? Perpetual or subscription? Cloud or on-premise? SAP-managed infrastructure or hyperscaler-managed?
The answers have to be guided by going beyond marginal savings. Instead, it should much more be a strategic decision and should be about optimizing business-critical applications in the S/4HANA cloud and provide a meaningful ROI to justify such a transition.
